Articles 20VN | Why Do You Want a Web Business | online business …

One of the most important things you need to figure out before you begin your web business is what you really want. Why do you want a web business? How bad do you want a web business? Is having a web business something you really desire, and will do whatever it takes to get it, create it, keep it, no matter how tough things get?

One thing that is almost inevitable with starting a web business is that it generally takes longer than you think it will to become successful, and that can be extremely discouraging. Do you have the temperament to stick with it when it is going slower than you anticipated when you began?

Do you want a web business as a hobby, for something to do in your spare time, or to help make an extra car payment? One advantage to wanting a web business as a hobby or as a source of a little extra cash is that there is less stress involved when you aren’t counting on it as an income, especially a full time income.

One thing about a web business as a full time income: Do not quit your regular job until you are consistently making more than you do in your day job, online. When I say consistently, I mean at least 3 months. Sometimes when you first get started online, you may experience something of beginners’ luck. You might create one product that is a real hit, but be unable to recreate the initial buzz with another product for six months.

That scenario is all well and good from the perspective of the extra cash right away, but sometimes it can give you a false sense of security in the web business.

You see, succeeding online is something that is skill-based, not luck based, or gimmick based. Sure, we all have luck from time to time, and gimmicks can work occasionally, but long term it takes skill to make things happen online. You will never build a long term web income on luck alone, nor will you generally be able to build a long term web business with one product launch.

If you are not prepared mentally for the setbacks that will inevitably occur as you grow your web business, as you have good months and bad, you will ultimately quit. You must go into your web business with the mindset that you will literally do whatever it takes to make it online.

Sometimes I think it is so easy to look at some of the long-time internet marketers who have created 10 or 15 products, have armies of affiliates selling their products while the marketers themselves are cruising the world in vacation mode, and fail to realize that, probably without fail, all of them spent literally thousands of hours learning the craft of internet marketing. They did not start out on a beach or a ski slope, they worked the long hours first. Many of them probably worked 60 hour weeks online while holding down a full time job, just to get the beginnings of their business cranking. Many of them still work the internet business fulltime, even if they do take more than the average number of vacations. So to think that you are going to enter the business with no experience and maybe no knowledge and create an online money making empire that is going to make you rich overnight, is simply foolish.

It is critical that you take the time to study the business. Do not be unwilling to purchase a few manuals to teach you how to do something. Which would you rather do: spend $50 to learn the material in one evening of reading, and be able to start applying it the next morning, or take the trial and error approach and take 2-3 months to learn one skill? And there are multiple skills you will need to learn. If each of them takes a few months to master, you could literally be several years into internet marketing before you figure it out.

Another note on studying: Once you have studied the material, once you have the head knowledge, you next have to apply it. And in most cases, there will still be some trial and error involved. Everything you do, you will need to test and track. Even if you are using a tried and true method of doing anything, for example, some form of traffic generation, you will be using a new script, or a new product. And with each new script, with each new product or sales page, you must test it and tweak it to get it profitable. Sure, you might be able to buy the rights to a proven sales page, but once that sales page has been around for awhile, its conversion rate will go down. And then you will have to test and tweak something new. There is no way around it, in the long run.
