(AP) ? Now it’s on to Colorado, Minnesota and Maine.

With back-to-back victories fueling him, Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney is looking toward the next states that hold GOP nominating contests as main rival Newt Gingrich brushes aside any talk of abandoning his White House bid __ all but ensuring the battle will stretch into the spring if not beyond.

Shortly after losing big to Romney here, the former House speaker emphatically renewed his vow to campaign into the party convention in Tampa this summer. His goal, he said, was to “find a series of victories which by the end of the Texas primary will leave us at parity” with Romney by early April.

Gingrich continued to shrug off Nevada’s caucus results in an appearance on Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press.”

“This is the state he won last time, and he won it this time,” he said of Romney. “Our goal is to get to Super Tuesday where we’re in much more favorable territory.”

But first, Gingrich must make it through Colorado and Minnesota, which both hold caucuses Tuesday. Maine follows on Saturday during a month that promises to be as plodding as January was rapid-fire in the presidential race. Romney will look to maintain his position of strength, if not build upon it, as his rivals continue working to derail him even as their options for doing so narrow with each victory he notches.

The former Massachusetts governor held a double-digit lead Sunday morning over his nearest pursuer as the totals mounted in Nevada, where fellow Mormons accounted for roughly a quarter of all caucus-goers. Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul vied for a distant second. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum trailed the field.

Santorum won the leadoff caucuses in Iowa and has trailed in the contests since then. He nonetheless insisted on Sunday that “our numbers are moving up continually.”

“I think we’re going to show improvement. This race is a long long way from being over,” Santorum said on Fox News Sunday.

And on ABC’s “This Week,” Paul maintained the results show voters are still up for grabs.

“I get energized because I know there’s a large number of people who are looking for another option,” Paul said.

With votes from 71 percent of the precinct caucuses tallied, Romney had 48 percent, Gingrich 23 percent, Paul 19 percent and Santorum 11 percent. Turnout was down significantly from 2008, when Romney also won the state’s GOP caucuses.

More than 24 hours after caucuses began, results from the state’s most populous county were still being tallied. The outcome could affect the second- and third-place finishers.

“Our goal is to finish verification,” said Clark County GOP spokeswoman Bobbie Haseley. “There is no modern technology when it comes to how the voting took place and the counting.”

Romney’s victory capped a week that began with his double-digit win in the Florida primary. That contest was as intense as Nevada’s caucuses were sedate __ so quiet that they produced little television advertising, no candidate debates and only a modest investment of time by the contenders.

A total of 28 Republican National Convention delegates were at stake in caucuses held across the sprawling state. Romney won at least 10, Gingrich at least four, Paul at least three and Santorum at least two. Eight were still to be determined.

That gives Romney a total of 97, including endorsements from Republican National Committee members who will automatically attend the convention and can support any candidate they choose. Gingrich has 30, Santorum 16 and Paul seven. It will take 1,144 delegates to win the Republican nomination.

Preliminary results of a poll of Nevada Republicans entering their caucuses showed that nearly half said the most important consideration in their decision was a candidate’s ability to defeat President Barack Obama this fall, a finding in line with other states.

About one-quarter of those surveyed said they were Mormon, roughly the same as in 2008, when Romney won with more than a majority of the vote in a multi-candidate field.

The entrance poll was conducted by Edison Research for The Associated Press at 25 randomly selected caucus sites. It included 1,553 interviews and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Nature’s Surprise: 365 New Species Spotted in Peru (LiveScience.com)

Hundreds of species never before seen in a Peruvian national park have been found during an inventory of the Amazonian forests there, according to a conservation group.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) announced today the discovery of 365 species?previously undocumented in Bahuaja Sonene National Park in southeastern Peru. More than a dozen researchers inventoried the park’s plant life, insects, birds, mammals and reptiles. The species found are known to exist elsewhere, but have never been seen inside Bahuaja Sonene.

The discovery included 30 undocumented bird species, including the black-and-white hawk eagle, Wilson’s phalarope and ash-colored cuckoo. The survey also found two undocumented mammals ? Niceforo’s big-eared bat and the Tricolored Bat ? as well as 233 undocumented species of butterflies and moths. This expedition was the first time that research of this scale has been carried out in Bahuaja Sonene National Park since it was created in 1996, according to the WCS.

?

“The discovery of even more species in this park underscores the importance of ongoing conservation work in this region,” said Julie Kunen, WCS director of Latin America and Caribbean Programs. “This park is truly one of the crown jewels of Latin America’s impressive network of protected areas.”

Bahuaja Sonene National Park contains more than 600 bird species including seven different types of macaw, more than 180 mammal species, more than 50 reptiles and amphibian species, 180 fish varieties and 1,300 types of butterfly.

?

Since the 1990s, the WCS has been working in Tambopata and Bahuaja Sonene Parks in Peru, and Madidi, Pilon Lajas and Apolobamba Parks in neighboring Bolivia. The Greater Madidi Landscape of Bolivia and Peru spans more than 15,000 square miles of the tropical Andes and is considered to be the most biodiverse region on earth.

The past decade saw a boom in new species discovered in the Amazon. On average, a new species was discovered every three days from 1999 to 2009, according to the conservation group WWF.

Brains of addicts are inherently abnormal: study | The Raw Story

By Agence France-Presse
Thursday, February 2, 2012 18:32 EST

?

WASHINGTON ? Drug addicts have inherited abnormalities in some parts of the brain which interfere with impulse control, said a British study published in the United States on Thursday.

Previous research has pointed to these differences, but it was unclear if they resulted from the ravages of addiction or if they were there beforehand to predispose a person to drug abuse.

Scientists at the University of Cambridge compared the brains of addicts to their non-addicted siblings as well as to healthy, unrelated volunteers and found that the siblings shared many of the same weaknesses in their brains.

That indicates that the brain vulnerabilities had a family origin, though somehow the siblings of addicts ? either due to environmental factors or other differences in brain structure ? were able to resist addiction.

?Presumably, the siblings must have some other resilience factors that counteract the familial vulnerability to drug dependence,? said the study led by Karen Ersche of the University of Cambridge, published in the journal Science.

?An individual?s predisposition to become addicted to stimulant drugs may be mediated by brain abnormalities linked to impaired self-control.?

Researchers tested 50 biological sibling pairs, in which one was addicted to drugs and the other one had no history of chronic drug abuse. They also tested 50 healthy, unrelated pairs of people as a control group.

The tests involved measuring how well they could control their impulses in a stop-signal reaction time test that assesses how quickly a person can switch from following one set of instructions to another.

Addicts are known to have poor impulse control.

The researchers found that the sibling pairs ? even the non-addicts ? fared significantly worse on the test than the healthy volunteers.

Brain scans showed that the siblings shared some of the same weaknesses in the frontal lobe and its connections to the basal ganglia, which mediates motor, cognition and behavior.

In an accompanying Perspective article, Nora Volkow and Ruben Baler of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse said that knowing more about brain circuitry could help understand and treat other ?impaired control? disorders, like obesity, pathological gambling, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

?Several childhood and adolescent interventions can improve executive function and self-control,? though more study is needed to see how such work may or may not impact the brain, they wrote.

Since you know what you need about this, then be careful you do not waste time in other areas. When you do locate what is meaningful to you, then obviously you will be compelled to focus on that. You can save a significant amount of money if you decide to implement all of these tips, or at least some of them.

The cold temperatures might cause your winter tires to deflate quickly so keep an eye on the pressure regularly. You will get better gas mileage when your tire has the right pressure, and it will give you a less chance of getting a flat tire. You should also avoid having your gas tank run below the quarter mark. Originally this was accomplished on older cars to make sure there were no frozen gas lines, but it is not as common with newer vehicles. You need to keep enough gas in the tank, in case you become stranded. Along with that, you should carry an emergency package, which has cold weather gear such as gloves and hats. The package also needs to have flares, flashlight, jumper cables plus some tools.

You should also look at the fluid levels before wintertime rolls around. You actually should check your cooling system, especially when living in a place the temperatures get below freezing. Numerous pricey engine failures are the result of an improperly maintained cooling system. Be certain your antifreeze is satisfactory and check it all through the winter. You should also include non-freezing liquid for your auto glass washer. You should also have your electric battery checked to find out if it can last through the winter. But let?s keep going because we have some exceptional tips for you to give serious attention. Get rid of any corrosion on your battery power terminals, or your car may not start. shelf-life of a battery is reduced with extreme cold weather. And be sure that you have jumper cables readily available in your car.

It is recommended to have your oil changed before winter even if it is not time yet. When it comes to an older vehicle, you may want to use a light weight oil to keep parts lubricated in the cold weather. New cars already use lighter oil making it not an issue. They don?t always go on that long during extremely cold winters, but you can still start off with new wiper blades. These new blades can keep your windshield cleaner with the ice and slush, and clean windows are important. You will want excellent traction in the winter months, so get your snow tires on. At a minimum use a very good all season radial tire.

You want to be sure that you are ready before the winter weather rolls in. When you delay too long you may get stuck in an early winter storm. You?ll want to plan in advance and start working on it now.

Oil hovers below $98 amid mixed US demand signs (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Oil prices hovered below $98 a barrel Thursday in Asia amid mixed signs about the strength of U.S. crude demand.

Benchmark crude for March delivery was down 1 cent at $97.60 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 87 cents to settle at $97.61 on Wednesday.

Brent crude was steady at $111.56 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

A jump of U.S. crude inventories last week by 4 million barrels suggested oil consumption is sluggish. However, factories raised output in January by the most in seven months, the Institute for Supply Management said Wednesday while the Commerce Department said construction spending rose 1.5 percent in December, the fifth straight monthly gain.

Oil prices have hovered near $100 for the last few months amid mixed economic signs from the U.S., Europe and Asia. Some analysts expect crude to begin to rise as the global economy may grow more this year than previously expected.

“The crude oil price has become stuck in a remarkably extended period of narrow sideways trading,” Barclays Capital said in a report. “However, the market is now likely to start to position for an upside break based on a greater degree of relaxation about macroeconomic prospects.”

In other energy trading, heating oil rose 1.4 cents to $3.06 per gallon and gasoline futures were up 0.3 cents to $2.90 per gallon. Natural gas gained 0.8 cent to $2.39 per 1,000 cubic feet.

The Center for Public Integrity: Presidential super PACs raise $49 million through December

Outside groups that funded numerous attack ads in the GOP primaries collected more than $49 million in donations in 2011, with huge contributions coming from billionaires, corporations and labor unions, something that would have been illegal were it not for pivotal court decisions in early 2010.

The top recipient among these so-called “super PACS” was Restore Our Future, which raised $30.2 million to assist the candidacy of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — that’s more than what was raised by the official campaign committees of any of Romney’s GOP opponents.

The Center for Public Integrity reviewed Federal Election Commission documents filed by super PACs that spent money to support or defeat a presidential candidate in one of the primaries. When considering all super PACs in 2011, total contributions were almost $100 million.

Restore Our Future, which has close ties to the Romney camp, has spent at least $17.5 million so far this campaign, nearly $11 million in Florida, where Romney won handily Tuesday night.

The $49 million total does not include the $10 million in donations that casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and his wife gave to a pro-Newt Gingrich super PAC, Winning Our Future, which were made in January and will be disclosed in a few weeks.

Super PACs were created following the Citizens United Supreme Court decision and a lower court ruling in early 2010. The high court eliminated the ban on corporations and labor unions financing ads to urge people to vote for or against a candidate. A federal appeals court decision led to the creation of the super PACs, which can collect unlimited donations and spend the funds on ads supporting or opposing a candidate.

The groups are prohibited, however, from coordinating their activities with the candidate committees.

To give a little perspective, an individual can give a maximum of $2,500 to a candidate for the primary. Of the roughly 2,900 donors to all super PACs so far in the 2012 election cycle, the average donation was about $33,500.

It would take about 39,250 people giving the maximum donation to reach the total raised by super PACs — that’s about 13 contributors per one super PAC donor.

Thanks to the courts, what we’re left with now is “a world of unlimited money in politics,” said Meredith McGehee, policy director for the Campaign Legal Center. “The few rules on the books can be easily circumvented by anyone trying to influence elections, and that is what has happened.”

Unlimited money in politics creates a “combustible cocktail” that allows “those who can marshal enormous amounts of wealth to control who controls the power,” she said. “This will drown out the voices of the average Americans.”

Not everyone thinks that money and politics are a bad mix.

“I think the regime allows for more spending, which I think is generally a good thing,” said Brad Smith, former FEC commissioner and co-founder of the Center for Competitive Politics. “Added spending helps voters understand the issues and put candidates on a spectrum. It informs voters.”

The pro-Romney PAC Restore Our Future got a big boost from wealthy investors, records show. Of the nearly $18 million it raised in the second half of 2011, friends from Bain Capital, the private equity firm where Romney served as CEO, gave at least $750,000. The largest donors were Julian Robertson of Tiger Management LLC and Paul Singer of Elliott Management Corp. Each gave $1 million.

Robertson is a hedge fund pioneer and wealthy investor. Singer is known for, among other investments, buying other nations’ bad debt and collecting on it for a profit. Rooney Holdings Inc., a Tulsa, Okla., construction company, also gave $1 million.

Chris Shumway of Shumway Capital gave $750,000. Bob Perry, a Texas homebuilder with deep pockets for GOP causes , also gave the group $500,000.

The second largest haul among the presidential super PACs was Make Us Great Again, which supported Texas Gov. Rick Perry. It raised $5.5 million with more than $1.3 million coming from oil companies.

Priorities USA, a super PAC supporting Barack Obama, has raised $4.4 million. Its top donor is Jeffrey Katzenberg of DreamWorks Animation who gave $2 million. It is also a favorite of labor unions.

Endorse Liberty Inc., the pro-Ron Paul super PAC, received $1 million in 2011 with $900,000 coming from Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal, which was later sold to eBay.

The biggest super PAC of them all is American Crossroads, when considered together with its nonprofit sister group, Crossroads GPS. The two raised $51 million in 2011, according to the organizations.

Conservative groups will need as much money as they can scrape together to beat President Barack Obama, who raised $128 million in 2011 for his campaign, compared to Romney’s $57 million.

David Donald and Aaron Mehta contributed to this report.
